Volunteer Mentor



DESCRIPTION:

The Urban League of Rochester’s youth programs prepare in-school and out-of-school youth for academic, professional, and personal success. Students engage in a variety of academic and enrichment activities, including academic tutoring, college visits, behind-the-business tours, mentoring, and family engagement activities.

Areas of Involvement:   Commitment to developing supportive relationships with one to five youth between the ages of 11 and 24 that participate in the Urban League of Rochester’s youth and workforce development programs.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Pass a screening interview and criminal background check
  • Make a commitment for at least six months to one year (will vary based on specific program requirements)
  • Interact with mentee(s) weekly, once a monthly, or twice a month (will vary based on specific program requirements)
  • Complete mentor training as required by specific program
  • Desire to make a difference in the lives of Rochester youth to help them achieve their personal and career goals
  • Ability to establish a relationship based on equal responsibility and respect
  • Practical problem-solving skills and ability to suggest options and alternatives
  • Effective communication skills
  • Sensitivity to persons of different educational, economic, cultural or racial backgrounds

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Maintain a mentoring caseload of 1 to 5 students
  2. Complete required mentor training
  3. Provide individual and/or group mentoring with assigned mentee(s) by contacting weekly, once a monthly, or twice a month (will vary based on specific program requirements)
  4. Document the time spent with mentee on a Mentor Contact Log that will be monitored by Urban League program staff
  5. Discuss mentee(s) progress with Urban League staff on a monthly basis
