AfterSchool Academy Counselor

Description

The Urban League of Rochester seeks a Program Counselor for our Afterschool Academy Program.  The Academy will provide promising 7^th to 10^th grade students from the Rochester City School District with intensive services to promote school retention, academic accomplishment, college preparation, social development and cultural awareness.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the ASA Director, the Counselor will:

• Plan and implement daily afterschool programming and occasional Saturday activities.  Activities will include academic support with emphasis on reading and math skills; social development/life skills activities; cultural awareness, field trips, leadership development, service learning and career exploration.
• Develop Individual College Preparation Plans with each youth, and periodically review and revise these plans to reflect changes in the youths' academic situations
• Recruit and work with volunteers, especially college students and retired educators
• Provide case management and counseling to students to help address any unmet needs of the youth and their families
• Administer pre- and post-tests and assist with the tracking of participants' outcomes for the purposes of program evaluation
• Attend/support Urban League of Rochester events and fund raising functions

 

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, or related field
• Experience working with youth in an educational setting, especially college bound youth; teaching experience is a plus
• Proven ability to make presentations and lead trainings for groups
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to relate well to youth from diverse backgrounds and to understand the barriers to success that less advantaged youth often face
• Ability to function effectively as part of a team
• Knowledge of community resources for youth and families is a plus
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office
• Ability to work a flexible schedule and be available past 5 p.m. on weekdays and on Saturdays
• Access to reliable transportation
• Fluency in Spanish is a plus
