Congressman Joe Morelle announces $2 million federal grant to the Urban League of Rochester

(Washington, DC) – Today, Congressman Joe Morelle announced the Department of Labor has awarded the Urban League of Rochester $2 million in funding to support programs that provide job training and supportive services to at-risk youth in concentrated areas of poverty. The program focuses on connecting young people with productive outlets to break the cycle of violence that plagues our community.

“Breaking the cycle of violence means more than just enacting gun reforms—we must also take steps to get young people off the streets and provide them with healthy, productive outlets. That’s exactly what this grant will help achieve,” said Congressman Joe Morelle. “This funding will allow the Urban League of Rochester to create an environment for success by providing job training and mentorship opportunities to at-risk youth—but more than that, it offers hope and sets participants on the path to a brighter future. I’m grateful to the Department of Labor for taking these steps to invest in our community and reduce the poverty and violence that hold too many people back from reaching their full potential.”

"We are immensely grateful to Congressman Morelle for his sustained dedication to ensuring that supportive programming for our community's youth continues to be funded,” said Dr. Seanelle Hawkins, President and CEO of the Urban League of Rochester. “We know that the cycle of poverty is inextricably linked to the cycle of violence; as we provide the next generation with more equitable access to career opportunities, we will confront, interrupt, and dismantle systemic racism in Rochester."

The Growth Opportunities grant program provides paid work experiences to young people affected by community violence, particularly in areas of concentrated crime and poverty. The funding also supports skills training, and employment and mentorship services that help young people increase their conflict resolution skills, identify, and develop career interests, attain relevant skills, and experience, and set them on a path to earn living wages and obtain high quality jobs and careers. This goes hand in hand with the Urban League of Rochester’s mission of securing economic self-reliance for disadvantaged communities, which has a proven track record of success. With over 25 programs focused on youth services and education assistance, they are steadfast in their commitment to provide hope, equity, and economic opportunity for all.
