Urban League announces transformational gift from philanthropist Mackenzie Scott

The Urban League of Rochester today announced a transformational gift that will allow the organization to expand and enhance the reach of its 25+ programs.

Philanthropist and author MacKenzie Scott has donated $4.2 million, the largest single contribution in the affiliate’s 57-year history.

“We are deeply honored and extraordinarily grateful to Ms. Scott and her team for recognizing the Urban League’s value and impact to the Greater Rochester community,” said Dr. Seanelle Hawkins, President and CEO of the Urban League of Rochester. “This is a game changer for our affiliate, allowing us to continue our racial equity and social justice work for years to come. Through her generosity, Ms. Scott is shining a much-needed spotlight on the nation’s structural and institutional limitations and helping to build a stronger, more resilient society for everyone.”

ULR is one of 25 Urban League affiliates who received similar donations from Ms. Scott, who in 2019 signed The Giving Pledge, a promise by the world's wealthiest individuals and families to dedicate the majority of their wealth to charitable causes.
